Bland boring story. ACD brings in the phrenology stuff because he was a big believer in that. He totally bought into the whole, black people have smaller craniums, therefore are mentally inferior BS. He wasn’t a product of his time, he just held morally repugnant views. This is him telling the public he wasn’t going to do more Sherlock Holmes. It isn’t really a story, no mystery, no heart, no emotion. Holmes follows typical English virtues and he doesn’t sacrifice his friendship with Watson, instead he saves him.
