Our Listener Library series continues this week as we listen to “The Screaming Woman” from Suspense, recommended to us by our Robert. Thanks, Robert! Based on a short story by Ray Bradbury, the episode tells the tale of a young girl whose Thanksgiving is interrupted by the disembodied cries of a woman buried alive. It features a performance by acclaimed child star Margaret O’ Brien, who won an Academy Juvenile Award in 1944 for the role of Tootie in the movie Meet Me in St. Louis. Can this girl convince her friends or family to help rescue the woman in time? Can you guess the uncredited identity of the actress who plays the screaming woman? Have we been celebrating Thanksgiving wrong? Terribly, terribly wrong? Listen for yourself and find out! Then vote and let us know what you think!

This was a great episode but I have to agree with Joshua about this era of Auto-Lite commercials. I had a great cassette collection of Suspense episodes as a kid that were mostly from the Roma wines era and I found those commercials (unlike the Auto-Lite ones) didn’t detract from the stories.

I thought this one was fantastic. I was so frustrated at the parents. I’ve never, obviously, had that happen to me. But I do know what it’s like to have that feeling as a kid when there was something urgent and important that had to be dealt with N O W and my mom was busy and my dad was reading the paper and my siblings were doing their own things, and not taking me seriously. It is a horrible feeling. So there was a bit of barely conscious satsifaction.. “SEE MOM AND DAD! YOU SHOULD HAVE LISTENED TO ME!”… Read more »

Good episode, but I did not find the father endearing at all. He is patronizing and sexist, threatens to abuse his child instead of just LISTENING to her. Just a piece of garbage. The big plot hole that bothers me is that the kids call police on the one neighbor, but then at the end the father has his kids call the police to report the killer… So why didn’t the kids actually call the police about the screaming underground??? That part of the story was mostly padding. I think they could have fleshed out other parts of the story… Read more »
