We’d love to tell you all about this story entitled “Northern Lights,” but we have been to told in no uncertain terms to remain Quiet, Please. Suffice to say that you’d never imagine a story about a cigarette lighter, caterpillars, and vowel sounds could be so creepy. Can a lush, elaborate description of aurora borealis contribute to a scary story? How is it that these scientists’ work on a time machine is the mundane party of the story? Is the work of an evil, twisted anti-Douglas Adams? Listen for yourself and find out! Then vote and let us know what you think:
Quiet Please is my favorite OTR program. This episode is one of the best.
As you can tell, we were not shy with our love either. Thanks for the comment!
I’m new to the old timey radio thing (thanks for the intro, btw), and this is easily my favorite episode so far. Not surprising, I guess, since I’m a sucker for the Northern Lights and insects, and am rather fond of Lovecraft. (This *was* rather Lovecraftian.)
The singing alien woolly bears are ridiculously endearing antagonists. You almost don’t care that they’re out to cause an ice age like nothing the Earth has ever seen. Hey, I can think of worse ways to go than at the “paws” of the cuddliest larvae ever…
Thank you for joining us! I agree on the horradorable nature of our future alien overlords.
I, for one, welcome our new baby moth overlords
Glad I found you guys!
Quiet please is such a fun series and Northern Lights is one of the best. I’m so glad you guys enjoyed it, I’ll admit I was worried. After all, if I told you about an otr about how caterpillars +northern lights =world domination and tried to give a pitch to listen I think you’d call me crazy. But for some reason it works!
Hopefully The Spider from QP will be on your list in the summer. A truly horrifying ep.
I love Quiet Please and remember hearing this episode years ago and really enjoyed it for all the reasons discussed. Up here in Canada I’ve seen the N. Lights many times and always taken by the mysterious other-worldly qualities they have. I always thought the pause between the “Quiet Please” introductions was intended to imitate the host asking a studio audience to be quiet before a recorded soundstage performance. Thank you for the great episode and discussion afterwards.
