Celebrate Halloween with the Society and Inner Sanctum Mystery! This week we listen to A Corpse for Halloween, a twisted tale of bizarre psychological horror. It features the shameless puns and sardonic style of Paul McGrath (in the spirit of his predecessor, Raymond Edward Johnson). Is having a severed head delivered to you ever not scary? Why would you accept a tiger cub offered to you by a stranger? Does Eric have a predilection for Mercedes McCambridge? Listen for yourself and find out! Then vote and let us know what you think:

Does “A Corpse for Halloween” stand the test of time?

I thought it was interesting that the main character’s name in this was Jimmy Fox, since Jimmie Foxx was a quite well known baseball player from that era. A bit like a modern TV show having a character named Derek Jeter.

I like the sardonic humor of Raymond’s ghastly comments and while they can be cheesy, to me the horror of what he’s saying usually trumps that. I love inner sanctum’s hardboiled noir flavour. I hadn’t heard this one before and liked it a lot as you did. Thank you for this and for the great work you do highlighting episodes and providing context and insightful commentary to each one! I’m working my way through all these stories and feel so much less alone now in my interest in them.
